Inquiring Minds
Hello again! I thought with the cold months upon us, this might be a good time to reflect on moments in the past (for Seaford). Many many years ago we to be a sleepy farming community known as "Hooper’s Landing” with around 2,000 people inhabiting the area. (Populated was at 7,000 in 2010 with no main industry to sustain it).

In 1925 the poultry industry became important. Farming changed "truck crops” to grain and corn for chicken feed. Seaford soon became one of the largests chicken producing areas and in 1939 the DuPont Company chose Seaford as the site of the "first” Nylon Plant in the world! The Company bought up several surrounding farms in the western part of town between 1938 & 1939 - later to be referred to as "West Seaford”. DuPont built it’s plant near the Nanticoke River where it had access to cargo boats and also a RR track was established for shipping north.

Did you know there was a commercial ferry across the Nanticoke River to provide access to and from the South and Blades? Eventually a toll bridge was established.

(side note) It wasn’t until 1921 that Seaford borrowed $10, 000 in order to purchase a fire engine & fire equipment.

After DuPont built it’s Industrial Plant, it built a 9 hole golf course - played twice = 18 holes, and the Country Club (which is now the Nanticoke Senior Center). More to follow…
